Liquid Nutrition

Are drinking shakes and liquid forms of nutrition valuable for my time and money?

Protein shakes and meal replacements can be valuable when used correctly.

Now, I will say that if you have the option of a meal or a shake, choose the meal every time. If not, there are optimal times to utilize liquid nutrition in your dietary consumption.

1. Before Training

If you are an early riser or train immediately after work, a protein shake with a carb source mixed in can be beneficial for you. Ideally, we would want to have a meal 1.5-2 hours before training. That isn't the case due to certain circumstances therefore inputting a quick shake will provide the energy to blast through training sessions. I personally utilize this tactic.

2. During Training

If you're engaging in an intense lifting session, drinking BCAA's with a carbohydrate substance has been shown to increase the ability to recover during exercise and maintain energy levels. If you're in a caloric deficit, utilizing this intra training drink will retain hard earned muscle.

3. Between Time

If you are a small eater but need to make caloric demands, a solid shake will do you justice. Having a protein shake or meal replacement between meals is a great way to keep you going throughout the day and provide yourself nutritional and caloric substance.

4. Before Bed

Protein shakes prior to going to sleep are a great way to keep your nitrogen balance high throughout the night and aid recovery throughout the day. This is a great tool to keep your muscles fed overnight until the next meal in the morning.

To Conclude

Utilizing liquid forms of nutrition can be a tool when utilized correctly. A well equipped meal will always beat out a shake but when used correctly, liquid forms of nutrition can be a perfect addition to your nutrition. Use wisely!
